38. That color is a little loud.

양복점을 경영하는 어느 교포한테서 편지를 받은 일이 있는데, 그는 미국 손님들한테 "이 옷은 너무 야하다." 또는 "이 색깔이 너무 야하다"라고 할 때 '야하다'는 말을 영어로 뭐라고 하는지 좀 가르쳐 달라는 것이었다.

'야하다'는 것은 색깔이나 스타일이 너무 '요란하다'는 뜻인데, 미국 사람들은 loud란 말로 표현한다. loud는 원래 '소리가 크다'는 뜻이지만 '야하다'는 뜻으로도 쓰인다.

우리도 '색깔이 요란하다'는 말을 쓰는데 '요란하다'는 말은 원래 '소리가 크다'는 뜻이다.

'야하다'는 뜻으로 flashy와 showy 그리고 gaudy 란 말도 많이 쓴다. This dress is too flashy for an eldery lady.는 "이 옷은 나이든 부인에게는 너무 야하다'는 말이다.

 

Salesgirl: Hi. May I help you, sir?

Customer: Yes. I'm looking for a tie.

Salesgirl: Here are the ties-a variety of patterns and colors to choose from.

Customer: (Picking one)Do you think this tie goes well with my jacket?

Salesgirl: I'm afraid that color is a little loud, sir. How about this one?

Customer: The color is all right, but I don't like the loud pattern.

Salesgirl: You are right, sir. That pattern is a little too loud for your conservative suit.

Custoer: (Picking another) I'll take this one.

Salesgirl: I think you picked the right color and pattern.

점원: 안녕하세요. 뭘 드릴까요?

손님: 넥타이 좀 볼까 합니다.

점원: 넥타이는 여기 있습니다. 여러 가지 무늬와 색깔이 있으니 골라 보세요.

손님: (하나를 골라) 이 넥타이가 내 양복 상의하고 어울립니까?

점원: 그 색깔은 좀 야한 것 같습니다. 손님, 이것은 어떻습니까?

손님: 색깔은 괜찮은데 그 야한 무늬가 마음에 안 들어요.

점원: 네, 그렇군요. 그 무늬는 손님의 점잖은 양복에는 좀 야한 것 같습니다.

손님: (다른 것을 골라서는) 이것을 사겠습니다.

점원: 무늬와 색깔을 잘 고르신 것 같습니다.

 

Salesgirl: May I help you?

Customer: I think I'll buy a pair of pants.

Salesgirl: have any particular brand in mind? We have many name brands.

Customer: Levi's is my favorite.

Salesgirl: What's your waist size?

Customer: 29.

Salesgirl: Here they are. We have two styles-regular and slim.

Customer: I'd like slim.

Salesgirl: All right. Try them on in the fitting room over there.

Customer: Thank you.

점원: 특별히 찾으시는 상표라도 있습니까? 유명 상표가 많이 있습니다.

손님: 난 '리바이스' 상표가 좋아요.

점원: 여기 있습니다. (바지 통 모양에 따라)보통 스타일과 홀쭉한 스타일-두 가지 스타일이 있습니다.

손님: 슬림 스타일(바지 통이 홀쭉한 것)을 원합니다.

점원: 알겠습니다. 저기 옷 입어 보는 데가 있으니 한번 입어 보세요.

손님: 감사합니다.

* '바지 하나'는 a pants 또는 a trousers라고 하지 않고 바지 통이 두 개니까 반드시 a pair of pants 또는 a pair of trousers라고 한다. a pair of를 꼭 써야 하는 명사는 이 밖에도 a pair of shoes(구두 한 켤레), a pair of socks(양말 한 켤레), a pair of glasses(안경 하나), a pair of scissors(가위 하나)등이 있다.
