31. Give me a ballpark figure.

우리는 "대충 얼마나 됩니까?" "대충 말씀해 주십시오." "대충 맞습니다."등 '대충'이란 말을 무척 많이 쓴다. 우선 "대충 얼마나 되느냐?"는 말을 영어로 한번 해보자. 누구나 알고 있는 about란 단어를 써서 About how many? 또는 About how much?라고 하면 된다.

그러나 미국 사람들이 꼭 이렇게만 말해 주면 문제가 없겠지만, 같은 말을 Approximately how many? Roughly speaking, how many?라고 하기도 하고 Give me an approximate figure. 또는 Give me a rough figure. 또는 Give me a round figure. 또는 Give me a rough extimate.라고도 한다.

또 Give me a ballpark figure.라는 말도 자주 쓴다.

"대충 말해 달라"는 말은 Give me a rough idea.라고도 하고 Give me a brief outline.이라고도 한다.

또 "대충 맞습니다"는 Just about right.라고도 하고 It's in the ballpark.라고도 한다.

 

A: How much did you make from your business last year?

B: Well, I can't tell offhand.

A: You don't have to be precise. Just give me a rough figure.

B: I think I made approximately $80,000.

A: Before taxes or after taxes?

B: After taxes.

A: Wow, that's pretty good.

A: 작년에 비즈니스를 통해 얼마나 벌었습니까?

B: 글쎄요. 얼른 말하기가 곤란하군요.

A: 정확한 숫자는 필요 없습니다. 대충 얼마나 되는지만 말씀해 주세요.

B: Well, I can't.

A: Half a million dollars?

B: It's in the ballpark.
